Critique Week is coming up! It will last from January 11 to January 17. During this week, deviations that are marked "Critique Requested" (for Premium members) or deviations that say they want critique in the description (for regular members) will receive priority over other deviations in the submission queue. This month's BOTM is the Hummingbird. By the way, if you are a fan of hummingbirds, be sure to catch PBS's special - " Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air". We recently declared the winners of our "Bathing Birds" contest - have you seen the winners?
Affiliate News # YoungButInspired is having a contest called " Freestyle"! Go check it out, the subject matter is a free-for-all! The deadline is January 31.

For those of you who get PBS, they are airing a special about hummingbirds on Sunday, January 10th! Click here to see a trailer with beautiful in-flight footage! Rules: Submit your entry by commenting on this journal with a link to the deviation. Do not send your entry by note. It will be ignored. Your entry will only be posted in this journal. It will not be added to Birds-Club's favorites like regular submissions. If any entry displays the incorrect bird, please feel free to say so! I'm no expert. Your entry can be new or old. It can already be in our gallery. There is no limit of entries per member. Hummingbirds are birds comprising the family Trochillidae. They are among the smallest of birds, and include the smallest extant bird species, the Bee Hummingbirds. They can hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12-90 times per second (depending on the species). They can also fly backwards, and are the only group of birds able to do so. Their English name derives from the characteristic hum made by their rapid wing beats. They can fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h, 34 mi/h).
Hummingbirds drink nectar, a sweet liquid inside flowers. Like bees, they are able to assess the amount of sugar in the nectar they eat; they reject flower types that produce nectar which is less than 10% sugar and prefer those whose sugar content is stronger. Nectar is a poor source of nutrients, so hummingbirds meet their needs for protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, etc. by preying on insects and spiders, especially when feeding young. from wikipedia Past Birds of the Month: Terns | Vultures | Cranes | Swans | Kingfishers | Herons | Parrots | Sparrows | Crows | Penguins | Owls | Chickens | Gulls | Ducks | Hawks | Finches | Toucans | Pigeons/Doves | Flamingos | Thrushes | Eagles | Trogons

Thank you, members, for making our first themed week a success! It seems our members started running out of flying bird pictures near the end of the week. For this reason, I modified the rules slightly - if we do not reach 15 themed submissions in one day, I will take other deviations in the queue, since members who do not read our journals submit with disregard to themes If you have any feedback about this activity (whether compliments or criticism!) please comment on this blog! And now... check out the best of our "Flying Birds" themed week! Flying Birds 12/28 12/29 12/30 12/31 1/1 1/2 1/3 Watch out for our Critique Week coming up! It will start on January 11 and end on January 17.

From now on, members may only submit to the sub folders in our gallery. These are: - Photography in the Wild - for photographs taken of truly wild birds. This includes urban birds like house sparrows and pigeons
- Captive Bird Photography - for photographs taken in zoos, aviaries, animal parks, and the like
- Our Pets - photos and drawings of our beloved birds at home
- Digital Art - includes photomanipulations
- Traditional Art - includes sculptures and artisan crafts
The Featured folder will now be reserved for what the admin think are the best of the best. If you would like your deviation to be in more than one folder (e.g. Traditional Art and Our Pets), please leave a comment on your submission saying so. When you submit a deviation, it shows up in your message center under "Correspondence Items," and you can click on the part that says "No Comments" and leave a comment for the admin of the club. Please try to submit into the correct folder instead of just selecting the first folder you see! It makes browsing the gallery more fun
